    Wetland Custodians at Groeneweide

Restoring and caring for a unique fynbos wetland ecosystem

Groeneweide Farm spans 120 hectares of remarkable ecological and community value. At its heart lies a unique fynbos vlei system, nourished by mountain streams and home to more than 430 fynbos species — including 26 that are threatened.

Following the fires of October 2025 and January 2026, a rare opportunity has emerged to restore this fragile wetland ecosystem. Through the Wetland Custodians initiative, we are working to rehabilitate the area by removing invasive alien vegetation, restoring natural water flow, and supporting the return of indigenous biodiversity.

This long-term restoration effort combines ecological care with community involvement. Volunteers help with gentle wetland clearing, and we also take small groups into the wetland to explore the restoration process and learn about the remarkable biodiversity of this landscape.

To realise this work fully, we are also seeking funding and strategic partnerships to support the removal of invasive species, ecological restoration, and the long-term protection of this special wetland system.

Together, we can nurture the recovery of this unique environment and ensure that Groeneweide’s wetland continues to thrive for generations to come.

If you would like to join a wetland walk, volunteer as a Wetland Custodian, or support the project, please feel free to contact us.
